"In God We Trust"

On April 22, 1864, the U.S. Congress passed the Coinage Act of 1864 with the mandate that the inscription In God We Trust be placed on all coins minted as United States currency. These words were placed on American coins at this time due to an increase in religious sentiment during the Civil War. Later, these same four words began to appear on paper money as a weapon against the athestic and materialistic ideologies of Communism.
